Maestro de Arquitectura | Tertulia 2015
On November 16th LA.IDEA held its annual Maestros de Arquitectura/Tertulia event at the DAC. Maestros de Arquitectura is unique lecture series created to recognize renowned Latin American architects for their professional accomplishments and personal journey as Latinos succeeding in the U.S. and around the world. This year’s keynote speaker was architect and urbanist Rodolfo Machado, principal at Machado Silvetti in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Machado is recognized as one of the most thoughtful voices in architectural discourse today, and has managed to seamlessly and successfully manage parallel careers in architecture and academia. A member of the Harvard University faculty since 1986, Rodolfo is a Professor in Practice of Architecture and Urban Design, Emeritus at the Graduate School of Design. He also chaired the Department of Urban Planning and Design from 2004 to 2009. He has taught at Carnegie-Mellon University and at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he chaired the Department of Architecture from 1978 until 1986. His firm, Machado Silvetti, has developed an international reputation as an architecture and urban design firm known for distinctive spaces and unique works of architecture that find their roots in context, materiality, and craft.

The evening began at 5:30 pm with the Tertulia, a 50-minute intimate conversation in Spanish with Rodolfo Machado. Members of LA.IDEA had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Machado reflect on back on his professional journey as an architect and ask him questions about his experiences. The Maestros de Arquitectura lecture followed at 6:30 pm and was open to all registrants. The title of the lecture was “What We Do Now: Working Here and Also in Argentina”. Mr. Machado presented 7 recent projects in different stages of completion, both in America and abroad: Atelier 505, a residential building in Boston; The Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin in Madison; The Theater and Studio Arts Building & Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York; The Vietnamese-German University New Campus in Binh Duong Province, Vietnam; The Center for Asian Art in the Dr. Helga Wall-Apelt Gallery of Asian Art in Sarasota, Florida; D.O.T. Office Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina: and the Museo del Territorio Guaraní in Posadas, Misiones, Argentina. After the lecture there was a Q &A session, followed by a reception.
